Stop the incoming water, if it is safe
United Utilities advises turning the internal stop tap clockwise to stop the water. It is commonly under the kitchen sink, though some homes have it in a garage or cellar. Only approach it by a safe, dry route. If you cannot find it, cannot turn it or the water continues, tell the plumber straight away.
Do not loosen the damaged joint or pull at the pipe to investigate. The immediate aim is to stop the supply and arrange a repair, rather than identify every part involved.
Keep clear of electrical hazards
Keep away from sockets, switches, lights and appliances affected by water. Electrical Safety First says the electricity supply should be switched off only if it is safe to do so. Do not touch a wet or damaged consumer unit or pass through standing water to reach it.
Do not attempt electrical repairs or use mains-powered equipment in the affected area. Ask a registered electrician to assess wet electrics before they are used again. If you cannot stay safely in the area, move away and seek urgent help.
Tell John what is happening
For burst-pipe repair, call John on 07973 344480. Give your location first, then say:
- Where the water is escaping, if visible from a safe position.
- Whether it is a drip or a continuing flow.
- Whether you have turned off the internal stop tap and what happened.
- Whether water has reached a ceiling or electrical fittings.
- How access to the property can be arranged.
A photograph can help explain the situation, but take one only from somewhere safe. There is no need to remove panels, lift flooring or climb into a loft.
After the flow is controlled
If you rent, report the problem to your landlord or letting agent. Contact your insurer if damage has occurred; cover and reporting requirements depend on your policy. Keep records without entering an unsafe area.
John takes calls 24/7 from his Newhey base and discusses availability and likely cost where possible. Parts or additional work are discussed before proceeding. If he cannot answer, leave a message or text and he will respond as soon as he can. See the areas covered.
