A visible leak and an unclear source are different

Tell John whether water is coming from a pipe, radiator connection or fitting, or whether you can only see its effects. Say when you first noticed it, whether it changes when water or heating is used and whether it is getting worse.

These observations help explain the problem; they are not a diagnosis. Water can travel before it becomes visible. Inspection may be needed to establish the source and appropriate repair.

When the leak needs urgent attention

If water is actively escaping from damaged pipework, see burst-pipe repair. Where a plumbing leak is suspected, turn off the internal stop tap only if it is safe to reach and operate. Keep away from wet electrics and damaged ceilings.

For water above you, read water leaking through a ceiling. Do not touch ceiling fittings, puncture a bulge or remove surfaces to investigate. A leaking radiator or valve may also involve heating repairs.
